One of the most important ways parents/guardians and community members can make a meaningful difference for students is by participating on the school council. Under the Education Act, a school council is a collective association designed to advise the principal and the CBE Board of Trustees on matters related to the school. School councils have legislated advisory and decision-making authority defined within the Education Act and the School Councils Regulation. They are different from Parent Societies & Associations, whose main function is to raise funds for the school. You can find more details in the CBE School Council Handbook.
Upcoming Meeting Dates
Although Discovering Choices does NOT have an active School Council, we encourage parent involvement in the following ways.
- Keeping in regular contact with the program staff to determine the progress of their child through email/phone or in person.
- Encouraging and enabling their child to attend school when needed and to complete his/her school work.
- Attending special events at the school, such as graduation ceremonies.
- Provide feedback to the Principal regarding your experience with Outreach.
- Parents of students with special needs who are attending an Outreach Program need to also sign their children’s Individual Program Plan.
